It also plays an important role in the immune system by helping destroying pathogens and eliminating them from the body tissues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">More about <a href=\"https:\/\/scribeschool.net\/lymphatic%20-system-info-for-scribes.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the lymphatic system&#x2026;<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Lymphedema is a common <strong>chronic and progressive condition<\/strong> after cancer treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Lymphedema mainly affects the limbs but it can also involve other parts of the body (breast, head, neck, genital area, trunk)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What causes&#xA0;lymphedema?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Lymphedema appears when the lymphatic system is either&#xA0;<strong>not formed correctly<\/strong>&#xA0;(primary lymphedema or congenital lymphedema) or when it&#xA0;<strong>has been damaged<\/strong>&nbsp;following an illness or surgery (secondary lymphedema or <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: Iatrogenic\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Iatrogenic&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Relating to illness or caused by medical examination or treatment&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/lymphoedemacenter.com\/?glossary=iatrogenic\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>iatrogenic<\/a> lymphedema).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Iatrogenic lymphoedema is the most prevalent form oflymphoedema It is very often the result of cancer treatments involving the removal of lymph nodes, or radiotherapy on lymph nodes, but it can also be caused by a damage resulting from trauma, another surgery, a malignant disease, venous disease, obesity or a parasitic disease (filiaris).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When does lymphedema appear?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\"><strong>Iatrogenic lymphedema<\/strong> may happen at any time, immediately after the damage or many years later.<br>Between 24% to 49% of patients will develop a lymphedema after <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: Mastectomy\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Mastectomy&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Surgical removal of the whole breast.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/lymphoedemacenter.com\/?glossary=mastectomy\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>mastectomy<\/a>, and&nbsp; 4% to 28% after <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: Lumpectomy\"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Lumpectomy&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Also called &amp;#039;breast conserving surgery&amp;#039; or &amp;#039;partial mastectomy&amp;#039; it is a partial removal of the breast.&lt;\/div&gt;\"  href=\"https:\/\/lymphoedemacenter.com\/?glossary=lumpectomy\"  data-gt-translate-attributes='[{\"attribute\":\"data-cmtooltip\", \"format\":\"html\"}]'  tabindex='0' role='link'>lumpectomy<\/a>.<br>About a quarter of patients will develop lymphedema years after breast cancer treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\"><strong>Congenital lymphedema<\/strong> may appear at birth or during the very first years. It often develops at puberty but can also appear later in life at adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the progression of the disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Lymphedema is a <strong>chronic and progressive condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">Lymphedema develops in stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"text-justify wp-block-list\"><li>At the early stage,&#xA0;lymphedema is at the <strong>&#x201C;pitting&#x201D; stage<\/strong> (the affected area indents when pressed and holds the indentation). Limbs are generally normal at waking.<\/li><li>At the <strong>&#x201C;non-pitting&#x201D; stage<\/strong>, the indentation created when the&#xA0;tissues are pressed&#xA0;bounces back. The growth of the extremity is irreversible.&#xA0;The affected area has a spongy consistency and starts to harden (fibrosis).<\/li><li>The affected area becomes very large, very hard&#xA0;and the swelling is&#xA0;irreversible. This stage is called elephantiasis.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the complications of lymphedema?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"text-justify wp-block-list\"><li>Lymphedema is a debilitating condition which <strong>reduces the movements&#xA0;<\/strong>in the patient and has an <strong>impact on the quality of life<\/strong> of the patient.<\/li><li>As the disease progresses and the fluids accumulate in the tissues, it creates an environment which is prone to various&#xA0;<strong>infections&#xA0;and skin ulcers<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Lymphangiosarcoma<\/strong> is a very rare malignant tumor that occurs in long-standing cases of lymphedema.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How is lymphedema diagnosed?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"text-justify\">The specialist has to make a good clinical examination. A <a class=\"glossaryLink\"  title=\"Glossary: Lymphoscintigraphy \"  aria-describedby=\"tt\"  data-cmtooltip=\"&lt;div class=glossaryItemTitle&gt;Lymphoscintigraphy&lt;\/div&gt;&lt;div class=glossaryItemBody&gt;Lymphoscintigraphy is an imaging technique used to map the lymphatic system.
